Next to the Botanic Gardens is The Tanks Arts Centre. These were WWII fuel tanks which have been cleverly converted and now form a fantastic space for exhibitions and concerts.
Tanks Sunday Market stalls
The Tanks are shaded by huge raintrees and the entrance wall to the centre is decorated by the roots of a giant strangler fig. Check the website for exhibitions, concerts and other activities. Collins Avenue, which runs past the Botanical Gardens and The Tanks, is closed for market days on the last Sunday of the month between April and November.
The entrance gate leads to Tank 4 which is the main gallery exhibition space.
A second exhibition space is off to the right - this is Tank 3.
Tank 5 , off to the left, is the main music venue. It holds 600 standing or around 400 sitting cabaret style. The bar is open throughout concerts and you can wander out and sit on the grass under the trees. Concerts here have a unique, intimate atmosphere.
Behind The Tanks is the Mt Whitfield Conservation Park. The 1.3km/1hr Red Arrow circuit and 5.4km/4hr Blue Arrow circuit are well marked walks over the range with great views of Trinity Bay and the city.
