Cairns / Flecker Botanic Gardens (4.5km)

These gardens, covering 38 acres between Greenslopes St and Goodwin St, are one of the world's great tropical gardens. The core of the gardens is on the north side of Collins Avenue but for a full visit you should also take the boardwalk through the mangroves into the Centenary Lakes side of the garden which runs along Greenslopes St. The lakes support many water birds, turtles, fish and the occasional crocodile.

Bring a camera because as well as the riot of plants, the landscaping is superb. There are open lawns with magnificent trees and palms surrounding a deep and densely planted cutting with a stream which bisects the garden. Free guided walks leave from the office at 10am on Monday-Friday and a bird walk on Tuesdays at 8.30am. You can also get a brochure for a self-guided walk.

After your walk, have lunch in the restaurant or bring a picnic. There are also BBQs beside Centenary Lake.
